George Gund Foundation Gives Grant to
Medina Summit Land Conservancy

The George Gund Foundation has provided a $25,000 grant over the next two years to help support the land protection efforts of the Medina Summit Land Conservancy.  The Conservancy is a private, non-profit conservation organization that works on a voluntary basis with private landowners to help them protect their land from conversion and development.  Its mission is to help sustain the natural heritage, scenic beauty and rural character of Medina and Summit counties.

The Conservancy is a membership organization is made up of individuals, businesses and other entities that are concerned about the fast disappearing natural landscape and the health of the region's environment and natural resources.  It is funded by membership contributions, fundraising drives and the support of private foundations like the George Gund Foundation.  Funding from this grant will be used to help pay for operational costs so that the Conservancy can use its other revenue sources for individual land protection and other projects.

Landowners who choose to work with the Conservancy and protect their land typically do so because they are committed to maintaining the land in its largely natural state and want to ensure that it will stay that way for the benefit and enjoyment of future generations.  The Conservancy also works with developers, regulatory agencies and units of government to help fulfill land protection requirements for permitting purposes.

The Conservancy uses conservation easements, binding legal agreements that control the amount and type of development that can occur on a property in order to protect its conservation values.  Conservation easements are negotiated between the landowner and the Conservancy and granted on a voluntary basis.
